So now that Owlet is about 6 months old she’s learning very rapidly and getting bored with the toys she has. Now currently I rotate her toys on a weekly basis but I also wanted to add some activities without buying anything. So I came up with this Rattle Jar.
~Gorilla Glue (optional, only really needed if your child knows how to screw off lids)
For this activity I kept an old peanut butter jar and washed it out really well. You can use almost any jar for this, I chose a plastic one because I had visions of Owlet playing with it and it suddenly just shatters in her hands… I’m paranoid, I know. But until she gets a better grip on things I’ll just stick to plastic!
After you’ve washed out your jar pick out the marbles/beads/etc. you want to put in there. I found bags upon BAGS of marbles and those flat vase filler things at my local thrift store awhile back so I snagged a few! I hadn’t really had a use for them, until now. I put about 2 handfuls or so into my jar, you’ll have to look at the size of your own jar and figure out how much you want in yours. Remember you want it to rattle, so don’t put too much in!!!
Owlet loves this thing. I’ll push it to get her going and it’ll roll away a bit then settle back so it’s enticing her to chase after it! She gets frustrated every now and again because, since it’s a bit on the heavy side she can’t push it very far. (This is another reason to be careful about how much you put in) I always help her out by giving it a good push and she goes squealing after it!
This project took me about 5 minutes (probably shorter) to complete and since it was used out of things I already had it was free!!! We all have that extra jar that we throw away, keep it next time and make this easy activity for your baby!
