When Owlet was born I vowed to have her potty trained before one year old. It just had to happen because I didn’t like diapers and I wanted her to be independent. Ha, ha, ha… Well, Owlet is now two years old and she still isn’t fully potty trained. If we leave her half naked at home she’ll go in the potty but as soon as that diaper gets on her butt she just goes in there. She won’t tell me if she’s gone or needs to go, nothing. So when we’re at home, she’s naked. But I’ve been trying to figure out ways to teach her to go without her having to be naked all the time.
I haven’t come up with anything solid but I figured I’d share my story, so you know you aren’t the only one out of unique ideas!
My first idea was that I’d just throw undies on her and to a public place we go! But… I really don’t want to have to explain to some poor store employee that my daughter had an accident. Sucks for them, embarrassing for all, I can’t do it. So, of course, the next idea is to start at home, put a diaper on her and ask her if she needs to go while wearing a diaper. Even if she says no, I’ll take her every hour anyway. Or maybe every 30 minutes.
I’m not good at starting and stopping timers, it works for a lot of people but I’ve tried it and I can never remember to start it back up once it ends! So I’ve just taken to keeping track in my head and taking her to the potty at twenty minutes or forty minutes, whatever works at the time. That way I’m not stressed to take her at an exact time or minute.
Owlet has started taking off her diapers by herself. She will no longer wear a diaper to nap, she just rips it off no matter how many layers I put on her. So she naps with undies on and in the past few weeks of this phase she’s only had two accidents! So I’m hoping this continues because it’s definitely a huge step I am very excited about! When we put a diaper on her for bedtime she leaves it on until she wakes up the next morning and if she wakes before me it’s off immediately! But I normally have to wake her up at about 6:30 am and when she notices her diaper is still on she taps her changing table saying “off, off” until I take it off. So, it would seem that she very much wants to be out of diapers as well, she just hasn’t quite made the connection of no diaper = no place for the poo and pee to go = having to go in the potty.
One thing I’ve always talked about with Owlet is that I want her to be independent and do her own thing. I guess I have to apply the same ideals when it comes to potty training ~sighs~ she’ll do it when she’s ready and not a minute sooner, that’s for sure. Until then I strive for patience!
